The Secret to Millennial Retention Now more than ever, organizations are working to understand what changes they can make to attract and retain employees, particularly millennials, who now make up the largest portion of the U.S. labor force. Especially since millennials are the generation most likely to job-hop,   with 60 percent reporting to be open to new job opportunities and 21 percent saying they’ve changed jobs in the last year, there are triple the number of non-millennials who report the same. What’s more, millennial turnover is estimated to cost the U.S. economy $30.5 billion annually so it should come as no surprise that organizations are increasingly seeking to implement new strategies to retain this valuable demographic of workers. So how can businesses crack the code when it comes to resonating with and retaining millennial talent in the workplace? With 35 percent of millennials indicating a good training and development program as the most desirable quality in a workplace, it’s clear that millennial employee turnover rates depend heavily on an organization’s ability to meet their needs when it comes to training. While many businesses are hesitant to adopt new technology in the training space, the truth is that without a digital training presence, businesses will never be able to fully satisfy the needs of this growing pool of employees who are hungry to broaden their skill sets at work. When developing a training program to meet the expectations of millennials and the next generation of tech-savvy workers, consider these three things. Millennials want to learn Millennials are on track to become the most educated working demographic in U.S. history. For the rising number of employees who’ve been through years of various degrees of education consisting of multiple courses and areas of study, the desire for change and diverse experiences in the workplace is more prevalent than ever. A digital approach to learning can fulfill the need for continuous, expansive learning opportunities. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a data-driven tool which allows businesses to deliver on-demand learning spanning a wide range of categories and areas of expertise. Flexible training models like MOOCs allow employees 24/7 access to courses and programs that are functional across multiple devices, from mobile phones to tablets to computers. This type of on-demand training offers employees the opportunity to expand their knowledge beyond their individual area of expertise. Millennials in particular often feel the need to seek new job opportunities when they feel as though they’ve learned all they can in their current role. Providing this type of extensive digital training allows workers to satisfy their desire for new challenges, while also growing their skill sets and fostering their career development. Further, as technology advancements continue to thrive, millennials are eager to obtain new skills, with 74 percent saying they are willing to re-train to remain employable in the future. Providing accessible digital-learning opportunities that are up-to-date with any new technology your business is adopting will alleviate some of the concern associated with the potential for a future knowledge gap with digital innovation. On-the-go training is the future Gone are the days of traditional, instructor-led training courses that take up too much time and result in minimal knowledge retention. Millennials appreciate flexibility when it comes to their work schedules, and this applies to training as well. Instead of being restricted to in-person training sessions or timed tests, flexible digital training tools allow employees to customize their learning experience based on their individual preferences and schedules. For example, while 58 percent of employees prefer to learn at their own pace, 49 percent prefer to learn at the point of need. Providing digital training allows businesses to fulfill the needs of different types of learners, allowing those employees who prefer to take their time the opportunity to revisit a given course from home or during their commute. Conversely, learners who prefer to learn at the point of need have the option to access training on their mobile devices in between meetings or when presented with an unfamiliar area of expertise on-site. This type of flexibility and access transforms the perception of training from a mandatory, check-the-box task to an invaluable resource. Take advantage of tech Technology innovations have produced huge opportunities for advancement in the training space. Millennials are not interested in a one-size-fits-all training experience, and technology helps businesses deliver those customized learning opportunities they crave. Take AI-powered tech like facial recognition, for example. Facial recognition software is enhancing the online learning experience through being able to detect the mood of the learner and communicating that to the program in real time. With that information, the course can automatically update to align with the pace of the learner so that if, for example, the participant is rushing through answers, the course can adjust to offer multiple choice questions instead of written responses. Additionally, if an employee appears to be experiencing difficulty with a training, the AI-powered course can prompt the employee with questions to better understand the areas or topics that are more challenging and as a result, help the employee through the exercise. I was a sponge and aggressive to learn.” I’m an avid sports fan, and I’m as interested in the coaches as I am the action on the field. When players are drafted or traded, the discussion seems to be all about his individual talent. Coachability is seldom mentioned in a long list of skills and achievements, although I’m sure it’s something coaches and recruiters look at carefully, especially in rookie players. To be coachable, a player needs to be open to the idea that he has room to improve. That attitude is in direct opposition to what got that player to the big leagues in the first place: huge confidence and unswerving belief that s/he’s the best of the best. That kind of ego isn’t confined to professional sports; you meet business professionals with the same swagger. And it can be as hard to coach a team of senior managers as it is a team of larger-than-life millionaires who have 6 inches and a hundred pounds on you. Coach Paul O’Connor says Being coachable to me is all about two things: not taking correction personally and the ability to take critical feedback and directly applying that feedback into the game.” So there are two coachability skills, and the first is by far the hardest to master. Taking correction well means surrendering your ego to a higher goal; you must value being good more than being right. Accepting coaching mean you accept several premises: That you have room to improve your performance That you care enough about your work to want to be better That your coach / manager / peer has something to teach you; and That the other person has sincere intentions and the company’s interest at heart It stings whenever we’re corrected or criticized â€" I don’t think anyone’s immune. We all know that twinge of humiliation when someone tells you that you didn’t get it right. If you can live with the momentary discomfort long enough to hear the coaching, you’ll be able to grow and learn. If you let the twinge close you off from your coach, you’ll be stuck at the same level for a long time. The second skill is applying the coaching to the game. True coachability means that you absorb the feedback and test it out the next chance you get. Better yet, you practice the skill over and over before putting it to work in real life situations. Being coachable means having the patience to develop a skill and the discipline to master it. Workers and athletes who are not coachable are often also not accountable. Every mistake or poor performance is someone else’s fault. The equipment, the conditions, a coworker, or the refs â€" they’re all to blame, but not me. Excuses are one of the best clues that a worker is not coachable. If it’s never my fault, I don’t have to change. If you’re wondering how to screen for coachability in an interview, Mark Murphy of Leadership IQ suggest asking this question: Could you tell me about a time you doubted your abilities? The answer, Murphy says, will be very revealing.   “… someone is not coachable if they’ve never had doubts, and they’re fairly narcissistic if they think they’re perfect. And you’re not just forcing them to reveal any doubts they’ve had; you’re also testing to see whether they’ve been able to transform those doubts into any kind of improvement and self-growth.” Every elite athlete has a coach â€" it’s how they got to the elite ranks. If Michael Jordan welcomed coaching, you’d be foolish to try to avoid it in your career.

5 Ways to Conquer Your First TV Appearance - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Ive learned a lot about the media over the past few years, from being interviewed by major magazines and online news sites, to calling into a few radio and podcast shows and then by taking a major step with a TV appearance.   If you asked me a few years ago if I thought Id be receiving all of this press, I would have laughed.   I dont think my friends have really gotten over this and last night a few came up to me saying Youre still Dan to us.   This further proves that personal branding is more important for people who dont already know you because you can never make a second impression (for the most part). My TV appearance story I received an email from Tory Johnson on April 7th (when Me 2.0 hit stores internationally), with a subject line that read Next Wed at 2pm in NY or via satellite from Boston?   I immediately said yes in excitement in an email responding to Tory. Since I had no experience on TV previously, I had many questions to ask her, such as what should I wear, what questions will I be asked and more.   I asked a few of my girlfriends what I should wear and they told me that I need to wear a dark suit so that I could stand out amidst the backdrop (cityscape).   I also called one of my friends who came with me to the ABC News station in Newton, Massachusetts. Once I got there, I had to sit in a waiting room for about a half hour before they called me in. I was, of course, very nervous at this point because it was all knew to me, even despite my breadth of knowledge in this area.   I walked into the production room and noticed that there was a chair, a large video camera, two beaming white lights, a TV to the left and a lot of wires and other equipment.   I was told to sit in the chair and start listening to the news, waiting for the producer to get on and explain the show logistics.   The TV to my left had me on it, with a cityscape, just like it would look like on TV.   I was given a microphone and an earpiece so that I could hear the news and Torys interview questions when the show started. Sitting up straight, being blinded by the two big lights and trying to smile, I sat there listening to questions from Tory.   I responded consistently based on everything Ive discussed in Me 2.0 and this blog.   The feedback after the show was quite positive, and now I think I have a lot more confidence for the next appearance whenever it would be. 5 Ways to Conquer Your First TV Appearance 1.   Dress the part Since my audience is more affluent and because any legitimate business person dresses in a suit for TV appearances, that is exactly what I wore and you should wear.   The one issue I had when I was at the studio was that my tie was crooked and no one said anything.   People noticed my tie and it distracted them slightly from the interview.   You want to make sure everything youre wearing is intact and that it all compliments each other.   Wear dark clothing so you stand out. 2.   Come prepared I received many of the questions the night before, but during the interview, the questions were different.   Im sure this happens a lot so they can catch you by surprise, so its important to come prepared and know your stuff.   This isnt that challenging if you always talk about your subject matter.   As long as you know the main theme, you should be fine.   If you wrote a book, then try and take some of the information from the book and use it during the interview. 3.   Provide short answers You can type many paragraphs for a blog entry, but when it comes to radio and TV, your answers need to be concise because the interview is fast paced and segments arent that long.   I was asked about six or seven questions and since I only had six minutes total, I had to answer each in about a minute.   Take your major point or a cool quote that you came up with and use it to answer the question. 4.   Try to smile I was trying to smile off and on when I was on TV, but it was tough sometimes because my facial expression was altered by the questions that were asked.   A lot of people gave me feedback afterward, talking about how I could have smiled more.   I think its difficult because you get so caught up in the moment, that you dont even think about it when the camera is rolling. 5.   Be confident This tip can be used for just about any advice on building a powerful brand, but it must be included in this list as well.   If you arent confident, you will flop in a TV interview because posture, appearance, personality and knowledge are the keys to success.   People watching on their TVs will know if you arent confident and it can really hurt your personal brand. Its my birthday! Make me an offer I cant refuse - again! - When I Grow Up Saturday was  my 39th birthday. I got to spend it being part of my bro-in-laws wedding (yes, he and his wife asked for my permission first, which was the cutest) and nothing could have been better. I dressed up in sequins and danced with my handsome husband. I was surrounded by family. I was celebrating love. It was  pure perfection. Last year I wrote: Birthdays are meant to be celebrated. Years are meant to be cherished. Time is not meant to be wasted. Each and every birthday is a gift, and while I like to think positively and imagine I have 50 more left, I  know that it just might not be the case.  Thanks, cancer! Its why I never take my business, my family, and my blessings for granted. Its also why I dont believe in waiting until retirement to actually start living your life based on  your values,  your needs,  your priorities, your interests and what makes  you happy moment-to-moment. I learn over and over again that time and love are our most precious commodities. So, just like last year, Im opening my calendar to those who are  ready right now to commit  to making a grown-up living with a business they love.
